Kerala. 99% Inspiration. 1% Perspiration
Kochi ranks 7 among top cities to travel by lonely planet |
There is a quote from the
inventor Thomas Edison who quipped “Genius is 1% inspiration and 99%
perspiration”. This, to many natives and visitors is an apt description for
Kerala with its high precipitation levels, humidity and a slow-paced way of
life. Scratch beyond its climes and the story underneath comes in layers of rich
history, diverse cultures and a tropical geography. From a melting pot of
religious diversities to the spice trade, to a fusion of cuisines, to
revolutionary societal reforms, to supplying skilled workforce to the world;
Kerala is constantly evolving. Couple this with its vibrant flora and fauna and
a unique topography, topped up with swaying palms, lush paddy fields and
emerald water-bodies; Kerala becomes a weave of stories.
However, to get a more updated perspective of where Kerala is headed to, it is worthwhile to connect some dots.
Fact: Kerala with the highest Human Development Index (HDI) in the country matches some of the most developed countries in the world that produces high human capital.
Fact: With 22 of the 30 world’s most polluted cities found in India, it is no surprise that Kerala is perhaps the only state in the country with breathable air quality, all year round.
Fact: In early 2019, India’s largest start-up ecosystem was launched in Kochi with the ambition of developing a community of collaborators, to solve problems and create innovation.
Fact: Kerala is a feast for all the five senses that has brought visitors for thousands of years from far and wide. The attraction continues and it is no surprise that the Lonely Planet lists Kochi in the 'Top Ten cities in the world to visit in 2020'.
A picture that is slowly emerging is where one gets a sneak peek into how its people, businesses and society are readying to grapple with the larger issues facing our times; of sustainability, urbanisation and a slowing global economy. An epic transformation is underway.
With its promises of a brighter tomorrow, it is only apt to conclude by adapting the earlier quote as “Kerala is 99% inspiration and 1% perspiration”.
